‘Mental health is the emotional and spiritual resilience that enables us to enjoy life and to survive pain, disappointment and sadness. It is a positive sense of well being and an underlying belief in our own and others' dignity and worth.

Emotional well being is about how we think, feel and behave. Our state of mind is influenced by the past and physical factors – the rest is up to us and depends on how we think and how we manage different aspects of life. It is up to us to recognise when we are letting ourselves to think negatively rather than positively and to pay attention to how our lifestyles affect our mood.
Like physical illness, mental ill health involves a wide range of complaints and complexities. Often these involve feelings of depression, anxiety and confusion – all of which most of us get at some time or other, particularly after a distressing life event such as a bereavement. With mental illness these feelings occur to such an extent or for such a long time that they make it difficult for a person to cope with every day life.
