safeTALK

Most people with thoughts of suicide invite people to help them stay safe. ‘Alert helpers’ know how to respond to these opportunities.

safeTALK is a certified training programme that prepares anyone aged 15 or older to support that desire for safety and invitation for help.

Action Mental Health’s safeTALK programme is available to anyone (aged 15+), anywhere, who would like to feel better equipped in interactions with someone who may have thoughts of suicide. We believe it could be particularly helpful for counsellors, teachers, ministers, those in a health or justice role, community workers, youth workers, emergency service workers and mental health practitioners. Please note that due to the nature of the content, the safeTALK programme is not recommended for anyone who has been bereaved by suicide within the last 12 months.

Participants will learn:

  • How to to identify the signs for risk of suicide
  • How to safely ask someone about suicide
  • How to listen to someone who is in emotional distress and thinking of suicide
  • How to increase safety from the risk of suicide and reflecting on what is expected within our job and volunteer roles

Upon completing the course, as a safeTALK-trained suicide alert helper, we hope you will be better able to move beyond common tendencies to miss, dismiss or avoid suicide; identify people who have thoughts of suicide; apply the TALK steps (Tell, Ask, Listen and KeepSafe) to connect a person with suicide thoughts to suicide first aid and appropriate intervention.

safeTALK is delivered by our experienced AMH MensSana team. Sessions are made up of videos, discussion and practice and last 3 hours. Free funded places are available if you are based in the Southern HSCT area. Please contact us for further details if you are based in another Trust area.
